Second mishap follows Delhi Metro bridge collapse
13 Jul 2009
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) today faced its second mishap in as many days near LSR College in South Delhi where three cranes clearing the debris toppled over injuring six people at the site, which had earlier claimed six lives yesterday.
DMRC managing director, 'Metro Man' E Sreedharan, who offered his resignation after Sunday's incident, was also present at the site when the cranes collapsed. He has been asked to continue at the post.
The site falls under the 121-km phase II of DMRC comprising 81 stations which is to be completed by October 2010. The 65-km phase I of the project was completed in November 2006. (See: Delhi Metro looks to fast-track Phase III amidst plaudits on 15th anniversary)
"He (Sreedharan) has agreed to continue (as managing director). We had requested him to continue," Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit said.
On Sunday, around 5 am, an under-construction bridge collapsed when one of its pillars dislocated, claiming the lives of six persons and injuring 14 others. This is considered to be the worst mishap for the transport system. The accident site was located near Lady Sriram College, in Lajpat Nagar.
The dead included four labourers and an engineer from Gammon India, the project contractor. DMRC has set up a four-member committee to look into the accident and table its report in 10 days.
