Ride on Delhi metro to cost more from Friday

From Friday, metro commuters in Delhi will need to shell out more for a ride with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation(DMRC) announced across he board hike in fares ranging from Rs2 for short distances to Rs8 for longer journeys.

The fare revision has been effected to help DMRC meet its huge interest and loan repayment obligations which are expected to range between Rs500-600 crore per year following the opening of phase-II sections, according to DMRC director (finance) RN Joshi.

The fare hike is expected to net a gross return of Rs1,026 crore for DMRC in the year 2010-11.

According to Joshi, the metro fares of the DMRC are the lowest in the world apart from the charges those charged by the metro authorities in Kolkata.

Under the revised tariff a ride on the metro from Vishwavidyalaya to Rajiv Chowk will cost Rs15 instead of Rs11 and the fare charged for traveling from Tilak Nagar to Rajiv Chowk has been revised from Rs13 to Rs18. The minimum fare has gone up from Rs6 to Rs8 while the maximum fare has risen t Rs30 from Rs22.

Meanwhile, UP is set to join the metro league on Thursday with chief minister Mayawati flagging off the first metro train between New Delhi and Noida.
