Centre approves rural ground water harvesting scheme in seven states

The centre has approved a scheme for the artificial recharge of ground water through dug wells in hard rock areas in seven states.

Under the scheme, 4.45 million dug wells belonging to farmers will be taken up for ground water recharging in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh

The concerned state governments are being asked to take all necessary steps for implementation of the scheme before the 2008 monsoons.

Under the scheme an investment of Rs1,798.71 crore  with a net cost of subsidy to the government in terms of civil works being Rs1,499.27 crore is proposed to be utilised.

The scheme provides 100-per cent subsidy to marginal and small farmers and 50 per cent subsidy to other farmers.
