Water storage in important reservoirs at 10-year peak

The current water storage position during current year is better than the storage position of last year and is also better than the storage of average of the last 10 years.

The water storage available in the 91 important reservoirs in the country as on 25 June was 43.26 BCM which is 27 per cent of the total storage capacity of these reservoirs.

This storage is also 111 per cent of the storage during the dsmr period last year and 146 per cent of storage of average of last 10 years. 

The Central Water Commission monitors the live storage status of these reservoirs on a weekly basis. These reservoirs include 37 reservoirs with hydropower units  with an installed capacity of over 60 MW.

The total storage capacity of these reservoirs is 157.799 BCM which is about 62 per cent of the storage capacity of 253.388 BCM which is estimated to have been created in the country.

Region-wise stoarage is:

Northern region
The northern region includes Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan, which have six reservoirs with a total storage capacity of 18.01 BCM. The total storage available in these reservoirs is 7.76 BCM, which is 43 per cent of total storage capacity of these reservoirs.

The storage during corresponding period of last year was 42 per cent and average storage of the last 10 years during the same period was 29 per cent of storage capacity of these reservoirs.

The storage during current year in the northern region is better than the corresponding period of last year and is also better than the average storage of the last ten years during the corresponding period.

Eastern region
The eastern region includes Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal and Tripura, which have 15 reservoirs with a  total storage capacity of 18.83 BCM. The total storage available in these reservoirs is 5.41 BCM, which is 29 per cent of the total storage capacity of these reservoirs.

The storage during corresponding period of last year was 26 per cent and the average storage of the last 10 years in the same period was 15 per cent of the storage capacity of these reservoirs, which is better than lst year's as well as the last 10-years' storge position.

Western region
The Western region includes Gujarat and Maharashtra, which have 27 reservoirs with a total storage capacity of 27.07 BCM.

The total storage available in these reservoirs is 5.91 BCM, which is 22 per cent of total storage capacity of these reservoirs.

The storage during the same period last year was 24 per cent and the average storage of te last ten years was 21 per cent of the live storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during current year is lower than the storage last year, but better than the average of the last 10 years.

Central region
The Central region includes States of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. There are 12 reservoirs in this region with total storage capacity of 42.30BCM.

The total storage available in these reservoirs is 12.67 BCM which is 30 per cent of the total storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the same period last year was 31 per cent and the average storage of last 10 years during the corresponding period was 14 per cent of live storage capacity of these reservoirs.

As in the western region, the storage in the central region during the current year is lowe than the storage of last year, but better than the average storage of the last 10  years.

Southern region
The Southern region includes Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with two combined project for both states, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. There are 31 reservoirs in this region with a total storage capacity of 51.59 BCM.

The total storage available in these reservoirs is 11.48 BCM, which is 22 per cent of total storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during corresponding period of last year was 13 per cent and the average storage of the last ten years was 20 per cent of storage capacity of these reservoirs. The storage during the current year is better than in the same period of last year and is also better than the average storage of last ten years during the corresponding period.

States with better storage than last year are Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Odisha, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The states with equal storage to last year are Maharashtra and Uttarakhand, while  Rajasthan, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, had a lower storage.
