Job ads down for second consecutive month in Australia
05 Jun 2012
Job advertisements in Australia are down for a second consecutive month as demand for labour fell even in the mining boom states, according to a private survey.
Total job advertisements on the internet and in major metropolitan newspapers were down 2.4 per cent in May, after a 0.8 per cent drop in April, an ANZ job advertisements survey revealed today.
In the year to May, job ads fell 4.3 per cent.
According to ANZ's head of Australian economics and property research, Ivan Colhoun, the most interesting development was that newspaper job ads in Western Australia were down for the fifth consecutive month.
He added, job advertising trends were signalling a softening of labour demand in Australia, which extended most recently to the mining states.
He added this mainly reflected in continuing weaker performance in the non-mining sectors of the economy.
