Obama to name Intel chief Otellini to competitiveness panel
18 Feb 2011
US president Barack Obama will name Paul Otellini, chief executive of Intel Corp, the world's largest semiconductor maker, to a presidential panel on jobs and competitiveness, according to a White House statement.
The panel of external economic advisers, headed by General Electric Co chief executive officer, Jeffery Immelt, was created by president Obama last month to find ways to encourage hiring and boost the competitiveness of the US economy.
Obama is to name Otellini to the panel today in Hillsboro, Oregon where he is visiting an Intel semiconductor factory for the promotion of science, mathematics and technology education. Other members would be announced to the panel in the coming weeks, according to the administration statement.
The competitiveness panel replaces one designed to offer advise to the government on responding to the financial crisis. The panel was headed by former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker.
The new President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness meets quarterly. It is supported by Treasury Department staff.
Before leaving for Oregon, the president, last night met with a galaxy of leaders from technology companies, including Apple Inc chief executive officer Steve Jobs, Facebook Inc founder Mark Zuckerberg, and Google Inc chief executive officer Eric Schmidt to discuss his economic policies.
