Trump vows 25% tax on Canadian, Mexican goods, additional 10% on Chinese goods
28 Feb 2025

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he would move ahead with the proposed 25 per cent tax on all imports from Canada and Mexico beginning 4 March 2025. Imports from China will be slapped an extra 10 per cent duty over the 10 per cent duty applicable from 4 March he said attributing it to the inflow of deadly fentanyl opioid into the US that continues unabated.
Trump said this in a post on his Truth Social site.
Addressing the media on his return from National Harbor after speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) annual meeting, he sdaid American tax payers need no bear the burden of Europe.
He said US exporters pay $350 billion in duties in Europe against the $100 billion European exporters pay in the US. That, he said, is a big difference and Europe should pay more attention to that,
Trump blamed the previous administration led by President Joe Biden for the bad shape of the US economy, adding that he would not allow American taxpayers to suffer for its follies.
On the Russia-Ukraine war, the president said talks are progressing well. Additionally, he said, Ukrainian President Zelenskiy will be in Washington to sign a deal on joint minerals prospecting in that country.
Most importantly, he said if a deal with Russia and Ukraine is made possible, that would be a great accomplishment as it would end the killing young Russian soldiers and young Ukrainian soldiers and other people in the towns and cities.
Trump attributed the high inflation rate to high interest rates, but said it is coming down, slowly. Prices have also to be brought down, he added.
