Hyderabad Industries forced to shut thermal insulation unit

Asbestos products maker Hyderabad Industries Ltd today announced a temporary closure of its thermal insulation products manufacturing unit at Dharuhera, Haryana.

The closure has been forced on the unit for want of installation of a proper and effective effluent treatment plant and air pollution control mechanism (ETP/APCM).

The Haryana State Pollution Control Board has directed the company to stop operations and disconnected power supply to the unit on 19 June.

The company has since stopped operations and the company's management has initiated the necessary corrective measures to ensure the recommencement of the operations at the earliest.

Hyderabad Asbestos said the closure of the Haryana unit would not have any material impact on the performance of the company, since the unit contributes only 4.7 per cent of the total revenue of the company (based on audited financial statements of FY 2009-10).

The company has technical collaboration with Cape Insulation of the UK. The company manufactures thermal insulation blocks and pipe coverings of quality conforming to international standards.

These insulation blocks and pipe coverings are made from hydrated calcium silicate, reinforced with non-asbestos fibres.

It is a rigid material with high compressive strength and low shrinkage at high temperature. Also the material has very low thermal conductivity. The large blocks and pipe coverings can be easily cut and shaped at site with carpenter's tools.
