Seven Indian companies have made it to the Newsweek Green Ranking list of the world's most environmentally-friendly businesses.

They are Reliance ranked at no 185, TCS  at 212,  ONGC (217), Infosys (299), ITC (368), HDFC (380) and  Coal India (445).

The global list is led by French telecom giant Vivendi, biotech firm Allergan, IT company Adobe Systems, French apparel and accessories firm Kering and Japanese telecom giant NTT Docomo.

The Newsweek Green Ranking is widely regarded as the world's most recognised assessment of corporate environmental performance.

The Green Rankings comprehensively assess the environmental performance of the largest publicly-traded companies in the United States and around the world.

Published annually since 2009, this project is the first effort by a major media organisation to rank companies based on their actual environmental footprint, management of that footprint, and sustainability communications.

The rankings provide a reliable, cross-industry framework for comparing the environmental commitment and performance of major companies.

In partnership with Corporate Knights Capital and leading sustainability organisations from non-governmental organisations and the academic and accounting communities, Newsweek ranks the world's largest companies on corporate sustainability and environmental impact.

The majority of the data used in the 2014 Newsweek Green Rankings was pulled from Bloomberg's Professional Service, which includes sustainability information on over 5,000 public securities and the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).
