105.7 lakh subscribers opt for MNP in May

Mobile Number Portability (MNP) requests were up 24 per cent in May to 105.70 lakh subscribers, from 85.41 lakh in the preceding month, according to Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( Trai) data released yesterday.
According to TRAI, in all, 105.70 lakh subscribers put in requests until May to different service providers under MNP, a service that allows people to change operators even as they retain their mobile number with their current operator.
Of the received requests around 6.32 lakh pertain to Haryana where MNP implementation started from 25 November, 2010.
Gujarat topped the state wise list with 10.53 lakh requests, Rajasthan came in at the second spot with 8.25 lakh, Karnataka (7.95 lakh) and Tamil Nadu (7.74 lakh ) came in at the third and fourth places.
As per May visitor location register (VLR) data, the number of active mobile users was only 588.13 million as against the total subscriber base of 840.28 million.
VLR numbers provide details of active customers at any given time, excluding switched-off and out-of- coverage area customers.
