2G scam: Kanimozhi must stay in jail, rules HC
08 Jun 2011
The Delhi high court today rejected the bail pleas of Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, and Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar in the 2G spectrum case.
The court said there was ''sufficient evidence to show criminal conspiracy'', and the accused could influence witnesses if set free on bail.
"Considering the political and financial clout of the accused, the possibility of them tampering with evidence and influencing witnesses, and the magnitude of the offence they've been charged with, their bail pleas are dismissed," said the judge.
Kanimozhi's mother Rajathi Ammal, who was present in the court, broke down in tears when the judge announced the verdict. Several DMK leaders including T R Baalu were present in the court.
Baalu said Kanimozhi would soon approach the Supreme Court against the high court verdict.
Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha MP, is accused of accepting a Rs214-crore bribe as a quid pro quo for out-of-turn allotment of radio spectrum. She was allegedly abetted by the now-jailed former telecom minister A Raja, also of the DMK.
