2G spectrum case: SC issues notice to centre
10 Jan 2011
Resuming the hearing of the 2G spectrum allocation case, the Supreme Court today issued a notice to the centre on the plea seeking cancellation of 2G licences allocated during the tenure of former telecom minister A Raja.
The apex court also issued notices to 11 companies which allegedly did not fulfil the rollout obligations under the terms and conditions of allocation of the spectrum.
The apex court also impleaded the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) as a respondent in the petition.
A bench comprising justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly sought the response from the Department of Telecom and the companies within three weeks and posted the matter for hearing on 1 February.
The court was hearing two petitions - one by Janata Party leader Subramanium Swami and the other by the Centre for Public Interest Litigation headed by Prashant Bhushan – alleging that the spectrum sale in 2008 had caused the exchequer a huge loss.
The petitioners include eminent personalities like former chief election commissioners J M Lyngdoh, T S Krishnamurthy and N. Gopalaswami; and former central vigilance commissioner P Shankar.
