The department of telecommunications (DoT) will hold the much-awaited auction for 3G or high-speed internet services for GSM operators on 7 December, and accept bids from 26 October to 13 November.

The auction, which is expected to change the face of the Indian telecom sector, is likely to lead to a consolidation among telecom service providers (See: 3G auction likely to benefit big telecom companies).

According to the timeline released by the department, it will hold the auction for EVDO (CDMA version of 3G) and Broadband Wireless Access after two days of the 3G auction.

The winners will have to pay their bid deposit amounts within five days of the closure of the auction and pay the balance after 15 days.

The DoT will issue a revised Information Memorandum in this regard on September 29. It has also asked for publications of ownership details of the applicants along with compliance certificates so that nothing goes wrong at the bidding stage.

''The pre-bid conference would be held on October 12 and clarifications would be addressed on October 22,'' the DoT said.
