The ministry of information and broadcasting has signed a 'grant of permission agreement' for establishing, maintaining and operating a community radio station by Union Park Residents Association (UPRA), in the Khar Bandra suburb of Mumbai.
A letter of intent has been issued to UPRA on the recommendations of the inter ministerial committee seeking requisite clearances from various ministries.
As per the agreement, the community radio station is expected to be operational within three months. With this, the number of CRS in the country will increase to 57.
Called Jago Mumbai, the community radio station will generate awareness for demo centres for composting and vermiculture, rainwater harvesting and solar power and create motivate listeners to fulfill their civic responsibilities on civic cleanliness, health and sanitation, waste management, water and electricity conservation and proactively participate in environment protection.
The ministry says it encourages setting up community radio stations by local communities to express themselves, empower women, youth and the marginalised groups to participate in local self governance.
