Washington: The Internet is the third most popular news platform for American adults, lagging just behind local and national television stations, according to a survey released on Monday.
While 78 per cent of the 2,259 adults surveyed for the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project and the Project for Excellence in Journalism said they sourced news from a local TV station on a typical day, 73 per cent said they received news from a national TV network such as CBS, or a cable TV news station such as CNN or Fox.
Fully 61 per cent said they get news online on a typical day, while 54 per cent said they listen to a radio news programme at home or in the car.
While 50 per cent said they read news in a local newspaper, only 17 per cent said they read news in a national newspaper such as The New York Times or USA Today.
The survey points out that on a typical day 92 per cent of the respondents get news from multiple platforms, with half the number accessing four to six platforms daily.
Of those American adults getting their news online, the survey found that 21 per cent rely on just one website for news and information whereas 57 per cent consult between two and five.
