Local TV, papers hit as Kashmir curfew enters fourth day
12 Feb 2013
The Kashmir valley remained under complete curfew for the fourth day today to prevent violence in the wake of the hanging of Afzal Guru, convicted in the 2001 Parliament attack case, on 9 February.
Information has also been severely restricted. News channels on local cable service remain off the air since Friday. The restrictions have also hit the publication and circulation of newspapers, besides mobile and internet services.
All national and regional news channels on local cable have been suspended since 9 February in places including Srinagar. Jammu and Kashmir Press Association president Ghulam Hassan Kaloo said the government has stopped publication of local newspapers.
However, people could watch national news channels through dish antennas. The entertainment, sports and movie channels were functioning normally.
Chief minister Omar Abdullah said he would help arrange for Guru's family to offer prayers at his grave inside Tihar jail in Delhi.
While speaking to a radio channel on Monday evening, Abdullah said that if Afzal Guru's family approached him, he would do everything possible to help.
