Karnataka unveils 2010 semiconductor policy-2010

According to the leading lights of Indian industry, the future of the Indian semiconductor industry appears to be bright. This was the shared sentiment that emerged at the Vision Summit 2010, the annual event of the India Semiconductor Association (ISA), the apex trade body representing the Indian semiconductor industry. The two-day event organised in association with the IT department of the government of Karnataka and UK Trade and Investment was held on 1 st and 2 nd Februrary in Bangalore. Delegates from Europe and Israel also attended the summit.

Dr G Madhavan Nair, ex-chairman, ISRO speaking at the summit said, "There are tremendous market opportunities for development in the semiconductor industry in India and we have excellent talent in our country, but the challenge is how best we can utilise it and bring together all the talents for the overall growth of the industry."

This year's summit which marked the event's fifth edition focused on opportunities in the next decade, electronics, embedded software, engineering and technology services, challenges and solutions in the Indian market. Key speakers at the event included C S Venkatraman, GM (Electrical and Electronics), ERC, Tata Motors, Ronald W Hovsepian, president and CEO, Novell and Francois Guibert, corporate vice president, STMicroelectronics.

The event also saw the presentation of the Technovation Awards.

The emergent cloud computing technology found special mention with Venkatraman projecting that the technology would sweep the industry like a tsunami. He went on to predict a new wave in automobile engineering with the electronification of motor vechicles.
Hovsepian pointed out that new technology always brought about greater flexibility.

Among the many interesting products on display were Freescale's low-power, high-power communications processor QorlqP1022, Bharat Electronics Pre Shower-32 Channel Silicon Strip detector for CERN, VuNow's Internet TV Platform and Tachyon Technology's artificial intelligence based solution for intuitive Indian language input-Quillpad.
