Kalmadi aide sent to Tihar jail

Shekhar M Deorukhkar close aide of former Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi was today sent to Tihar jail under 14-day judicial custody for his alleged role in the multi-crore rupees overlays scam linked to the sporting event.
Special CBI judge, O P Saini said, it was submitted by the CBI that since the investigation was not yet complete, the accused may be remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
He added that Deorukhkar had been remanded to judicial custody till 5March .
Deorukhkar is the fifth person to be arrested in the scam was picked up from Pune on 11 February. He is allegedly involved in a scam related to nearly Rs600 crore worth of contracts in the Games' overlays project being investigated by agencies.
The judicial custody of Binu Nanu, who is a managing director of private firms Meroform India Pvt Ltd and G L Events Pvt Ltd was also extended till 5 March.
According to the CBI's contention before the court Deorukhkar and VK Verma -- DG of the Organising Committee at that time had caused huge loss to the exchequer by awarding contracts to Mero Form Indian Pvt Ltd (France), GL events Pvt Ltd, PICO Deepali overlays consortium (New Delhi), Nussli (Switzerland), and ESAJV:D Art Indo consortium at exorbitant rates.
The overlay works for the games involved supply of tents, marquees, athletic exercise equipment, pre-fabricated units, portable toilets, security fences, containers, furniture, and other items.
