Fewer foreign tourists bring more foreign exchange in September 2009

Foreign exchange earnings from tourist arrivals in India rose over 17 per cent to Rs3,798 crore as of September 2009 against Rs3,143 crore in September 2008 even as foreign tourist arrivals in the country stood lower at 3.17 lakh against 3.31 lakh in September 2008. The number of tourist arrivals into the country in September 2009, however, was higher compared with September 2007 figure of 3.02 lakh.
Foreign exchange earnings from tourist arrivals in the country stood at Rs3,798 crore during September 2009 against Rs3,143 crore in September 2008.
For the January-September 2009 period, foreign exchange earnings from the sector stood higher at Rs37,589 crore against Rs36,464 crore in January-September 2008.
Earnings in dollar terms during September 2009 were up at $785 million against $689 million received in September 2008.
During January-September 2009, however, foreign exchange earnings from tourist arrivals were lower (-13.1 per cent) at $7.67 billion against $8.82 billion received during January-September 2008.
The growth rate in foreign exchange earnings during January-September 2009 showed some improvement over the growth rate during January-August 2009 (-15.3 per cent).
