Airbus picks up $13.5 billion, 100 aircraft order from Dubai Aerospace

Dubai: The tenth edition of the Dubai Air Show has opened on a happy note for the world''s biggest plane maker, Airbus SAS, with the company announcing a preliminary order for 100 aircraft, valued at about $13.5 billion from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise''s (DAE) leasing unit. The order will be the Middle East company''s first purchase.

The DAE has signed a letter of intent covering 70 A320 family aircraft and 30 A350 XWBs, according to a statement issued to the media. Delivery of the aircraft is scheduled for the period 2013-2022.

The price includes Rolls-Royce Group Plc engines to power the A350s, valued at $1.2 billion, according to the statement.

The contract helps Airbus widen its lead over Boeing Co in winning orders from customers in the Middle East.
