A BHEL-Alstom consortium has secured a contract from Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for the supply of 700 MWe steam turbine generators.

This is a major milestone for Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) as these will be the highest rating indigenously-developed nuclear sets in the country, BHEL said in release today.

The contract, valued at over Rs1,906 crore, is for supply of steam turbines for NPCIL's 2x700 MWe Rawatbhata Nuclear Power Station (Units 7&8), located in Rajasthan. BHEL's share in the contract is around Rs1,207 crore, while Alstom's share is about Rs700 crore, the release said.

BHEL-Alstom consortium will supply and commission the turbine generator packages for the station's two 700-MWe capacity units.

The expansion of the existing capacity of the 1,180-MW of RAPP nuclear power plant will help meet the country's increasing demand for power, Alstom said.

Alstom said this order follows the 2x700 MW units for the Kakrapar 3 and 4 nuclear power plants in Gujarat a year ago.
