Canada’s Globalive wins court battle against Public Mobile
28 Apr 2012
Canadian telecom operator Globalive Communications Corporation has won a court fight with rival Public Mobile Inc, as the Canadian Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge by the latter against an earlier federal court decision confirming Globalive's group company Wind Mobile's compliance with Canadian ownership rules.
The court decision conclusively ends the long-running regulatory and legal battles with Wind Mobile's competitors over its compliance with Canadian ownership rules. The case was dismissed with costs in favour of Globalive, the company said in a statement.
Toronto-based Globalive is a leader in next-generation telecommunications solutions ranging from long-distance services and high-speed internet, to mobile phone services, VoIP and carrier clearinghouse solutions.
Globalive group companies include Yak Communications, OneConnect, Canopco, Assemble Conferencing, InterClear, Lucky Call, Canada Payphone, Cohere Communications and the newest entity, Wind Mobile.
Wind Mobile, which started its operation in 2009, provides voice, text and data services through a next-generation all-IP wireless network. The company has over 400,000 customers and operates over 490 distribution points.
Thrilled with the supreme court ruling, Wind Mobile chairman Anthony Lacavera said, ''We're extremely pleased with the supreme court's decision, which will allow us to tie off this loose end and continue working with the best interests of Canadians firmly in mind.''
