CBI raids reveal expired drug use at CGHS hospitals

Raids by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have revealed expired drugs being administered at several Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) hospitals in Hyderabad, Bangalore and Vishakhapatnam.
The raids were also directed towards uncovering the supply of spurious drugs. In Bangalaore, raids were conducted at the CGHS hospitals at Koramangala, Shivaji Nagar, Malleswaram, Basavanagudi, Ulsoor, Vijayanagar, Jayanagar, Domlur, Ganganagar and C V Raman Nagar and at the Railway Hospital and ESIC Model Hospital in Bangalore.
The checks were conducted following several public complaints of low quality medicines being distributed at CGHS and other hospitals.
The hospitals raided in Hyderabad included CGHS hospitals at Begumpet, Alwal, Tarnaka, Secunderabad, Dilsukhnagar, Kanchanbagh, Charminar and Kakatiya Nagar, as also Railway Hospital and ESI Hospitals at Nacharam and Sanathnagar.
According to CBI deputy inspector-general VV Lakshminarayana it was found that drugs that had expired had been supplied to the CGHS dispensaries at Begumpet, Alwal, Kanchanbagh and Charminar and also at the ESI hospital at Nacharam.
After taking samples of 23 infected drugs from 14 manufacturing companies the bureau has sent the same for clinical tests.
