In a crackdown on online pornography, China's Cyperspace Administration closed nearly 1.8 million accounts on social networking and instant messaging services since April, state news agency Xinhua reported today.
The campaign was focused on shutting down websites featuring pornography and services used for soliciting prostitution.
Most of the closed accounts were associated with microblogs, smart phone app WeChat and the instant messaging service QQ, Xinhua quoted the Cyberspace Administration as saying.
According to Xinhua, many of the accounts were shut down by the companies owning the apps themselves following public complaints.
The Chinese government regularly cracks down on pornography as the ruling Communist Party considers it deeply offensive to public morality.
