Continued intolerance: Another man held for anti-Modi WhatsApp post
27 May 2014
Just days after a young professional was arrested for apparently anti-Narendra Modi comments on Facebook, the Belgaum police, with the assistance of the Central Crime Branch (CCB), Bangalore, arrested Syed Waquas, a 24-year-old MBA student, for allegedly sending anti-Modi messages, including a morphed photo on WhatsApp.
The complaint was filed by a Jayant Tinaikar, a social activist, at Khanapur in Belgaum district. He received a text message stating 'Ab ki baar Modi antim sanskar' (This time Modi's funeral).
The message was received on 16 May and Tinaikar filed a complaint a week later on 23 May.
On investigation, the Khanapur police discovered that the message originated from Bangalore.
''The Belgaum police asked us for assistance and we helped them,'' said joint commissioner of police, Hemant Nimbalkar.
According to him, Waquas, who hails from Bhatkal in Uttara Kannada district, has been in Bangalore for the last two months and is interning with a private company. His internship ends on 29 May.
''We picked him up from an apartment in Vasanthnagar where he was living with his three friends. His roommates were also questioned to ascertain that there were no antecendents and were released later,'' Nimbalkar said.
The complaint has been filed under Sections 66 and 505 (2) of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
