Following the protests of Delhi Development Authority (DDA) engineers over the work they are supposed to finish on 5,009 rooms in Vasant Kunj, DDA vice-chairman A K Nigam yesterday said the authority would try to ensure that at least 4,000 flats would be ready by 10 September.

Nigam said in April 2009, DDA volunteered to have 5,000 rooms ready for the Commonwealth Games in Vasant Kunj.

He added that these flats, part of DDA's usual housing construction, had to be upgraded to match three-star accommodation.

He said work on the upgrade began only in April 2009 and by 10 September, the DDA is aiming to have at least 4,000 of these rooms ready.

Nigam said that about a month back, the main contractors on the project, M/s A K Mehta and M/s Brahmaputra, had pleaded inability to execute work on schedule on 16 of 40 towers and surrendered the same.

Nigam said the DDA has appointed 10-11 contractors to work on these towers, and it was certain the work would be completed.

The Games Organising Committee (OC) asked for 1,600 rooms to be made available for delegates and volunteers, and the rest to house tourists.

Bajaj denied that the quality of work is being compromised in its bid to meet deadlines, as alleged by the DDA's engineering union, Bajaj.
