Seafood industry gets a boost

The Indian seafood industry has got a shot in the arm with the European Union giving the 'go ahead' to more than 20 marine processing companies for exporting seafood to Europe. With this, the total number of companies that have got elegibility to export seafood to this region has increased to 76.

Apart from these companies, eight on-board shipping vessels have also been approved so far by the EU.

Just to recount, the EU had in May 1997,  had banned Indian marine products from being to shipped to Europe stating unhygeinic processing conditions that prevailed in the local export oriented units.
