French drug giant Sanofi-Aventis opens R&D centre in Goa

Mumbai: French pharmaceutical group Sanofi-Aventis has opened a Rs100 crore facility in Goa - its largest in Asia and first pharmaceutical development centre in India.
The centre with around 50 employees, is operational and the number could go up as the group expands its presence and accelerates growth both in India and Asia, the company said in a release.
The centre will be a hub for analytical and pharmaceutical formulation development, with capacity to develop 12 pharmaceutical compounds a year, the company said.
The facility will allow the group to introduce new, quality medicines in the Asia-Pacific and global marketplace, the company said in the release.
Sanofi-Aventis produces around 127 compounds, including vaccines, at different stages of development, according to a company statement.
The investment in India is significant as several pharmaceutical companies are planning to outsource production and product development as also research and development to Asia and India and China in particular.
