The government will soon notify the date and time of a third round auction of 2G GSM spectrum that was freed following cancellation of 122 telecom licences by Supreme Court in February last year.

The department of telecommunications (DoT) on Wednesday announced that it would hold a separate auction for the leftover 1800 MHz spectrum as directed by the Supreme Court in its order of 15 February 2013.

The apex court, in its order last week, had directed the government to auction the entire spectrum that was vacated by the cancellation of 122 telecom licences by its order dated 2 February 2012.

The SC order had freed 514.8 MHz of spectrum, but the government had only put up 271.25 MHz of spectrum for sale in the November 2012 auction.

"Details are being worked out and a separate NIA (notice inviting application) in this regard will be issued shortly," DoT said.

The second round of spectrum sale will be held on 11 March, when the government will auction unsold GSM spectrum in 1800 MHz band for Karnataka, Rajasthan, Delhi and Mumbai and for spectrum in 900MHz band in metro service areas of Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata.
