GSM mobile subscriber base swells 13.7 million to 394.2 million in January

The GSM mobile service providers in the country added a total 13.7 million subscribers in January 2010, taking the overall GSM subscriber base to 394.2 million.

GSM operators had added 13.1 million subscribers in December 2009.

According to figures released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), Bharti Airtel was the leader with 2.85 million subscribers added in January. This takes the total user base of Bharti Airtel to 121.7 million.

Close rival Vodafone added 2.7 new users in the month, pushing its subscriber base to 94.14 million at the end of January, COAI data showed.

The Idea Cellular-Spice Communications combine added 2.27 million users to take its subscriber base to a total 59.88 million.

State-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) added 2.2 million users in January taking its subscriber base to 59.45 million.
