HC adjourns Kanimozhi bail plea hearing to 30 May
24 May 2011
Kanimozhi, the Rajya Sabha MP and daughter of DMK supremo K Karuninidhi, will have to cool her heels in jail for at least a little longer along with Kalaignar TV managing director Sharad Kumar, as the Delhi High Court today adjourned their bail plea in the 2G scam till 30 May, after issuing a notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation in this connection.
"Issue notice to the CBI for 30 May," justice Ajit Bharihoke said in a terse order. He also asked the agency to file a status report detailing the stage of investigation and the judicial proceedings in the case on the next date of hearing.
Kanimozhi and Kumar had on Monday appealed to the high court challenging trial court special judge O P Saini's order denying her bail and sending her into custody.
On the same day, justice Bharihoke had turned down the bail pleas of five top corporate executives, sending a clear signal that the court is not inclined to grant bail to the accused in the case.
Kanimozhi has been in Tihar Jail since last Friday after special judge Saini of the CBI court hearing the 2G case ordered her immediate arrest.
She has been charged by the CBI with conspiring with former telecom minister A Raja and accepting a Rs214-crore bribe through family-owned Kalaignar TV for the grant of telecom spectrum to an ineligible company.
