Huawei to invest $500 million in Bangalore R&D centre

Chinese telecom equipment vendor Huawei Technologies Co Ltd said in New Delhi that it is planning an investment of $500 million in its R&D centre in Bangalore over the next five years.
According to Huawei CEO Max Yang the company would undertake R&D in next generation technologies and GSM networks.
The company's Bangalore centre is Huawei's largest R&D centre of outside Shenzen, in China.
According to Yang, the number of employees at the Indian R&D centre would increase to 5,000 from the current 2,000.
The Chinese company is looking at India's 3G market and is hopeful of bagging 3G network orders from Indian operators including Bharti Airtel, India's largest wireless telecom operator.
Yang said Huawei is in the price sensitive Indian market for the long haul. The company's plans also include making India a hub for its global operations and additionally setting up local manufacturing in the country where it will produce telecom equipment.
