iiNet slams Telstra’s trial move to throttle speeds

Australia's second largest DSL internet service provider (ISP), iiNet, has slammed Australian telco, Telstra's move to undertake a trial to throttle speeds when customers use peer-to-peer networks.
According to Telstra the trial would allow it to better manage its network performance. However, according to John Lindsay, chief technology officer (CTO) at iiNet, it was purely a business decision to avoid upgradation of its ADSL network.
He told Computerworld Australia that he thought that they had looked at how their network was being used and what was driving them to the need to upgrade portions of it.
He said there appeared to be congestion at some exchanges at present and they were thinking if they let go the very small number of users who generated a large amount of traffic, they could stave it off and maybe put it off for longer until the NBN. This meant the investment was never needed, he added.
Telstra yesterday announced it would conduct a trial for some customers on its ADSL network in Victoria, leaving the choice to participate with the users.
''Telstra will consider the results of this trial as part of its future network planning and product development activities. No decisions have been made to extend any of the network management practices being tested in this trial to our broader customer base,'' the telco said in a blog post.
