India bans N-exports to Iran
22 Feb 2007
Mumbai: India has imposed a ban on export to Iran of all materials and technology that could be used for developing nuclear weapons and delivery systems. The decision is in compliance with the UN Security Council Resolution of last year.
A notification issued by the director general of foreign trade said the export and import of all items, materials and technologies that could contribute to Iran's enrichment-related activities is banned.
"Direct or indirect export and import of all items, materials, equipment, goods and technology which could contribute to Iran's enrichment-related, reprocessing or heavy water related activities, or to the development of nuclear weapon delivery systems... Whether or not originating in Iran to/from Iran is prohibited," the DGFT notification said.
The DGFT has, however, exempted export of equipment meant for light water reactors and low-enriched uranium when it is incorporated in assembled nuclear fuel elements for such reactors.
The Security Council, which voted to ban supply of nuclear-related technology and materials to Iran, has demanded that Tehran should end all uranium enrichment work, which can produce nuclear fuel. Iran, however, ignored the UN demands and has vowed to pursue an independent nuclear policy.
