India elected chairman of the executive council of United Nations World Tourism Organisation

India has been unanimously elected the chairman of the executive council of the General Assembly of United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
At its 82nd meeting, held on 29 November 2007, at Cartegena de Indias, Colombia, the executive council elected India as its chairman for a period of one year. The Indian minister of tourism and culture, Ms Ambika Soni attended the meeting.
The council meets twice a year and is empowered to take all measures necessary in consultation with the UN Secretary General for the implementation of the decisions and the recommendations of the Assembly and to report to the Assembly.
In addition, the Executive Council meets between sessions of the UN General Assembly and, in the absence of any contrary provisions in the statutes the Council, takes such administrative and technical decisions as may be necessary, within the functions and financial resources of the organization, and reports decisions which have been taken to the Assembly at its following session, for approval.
