11 Apr 2011
With the roll out of broadband wireless access and 3G network, the mobile value added services would generate in excess of Rs55,000 crore in the next four years, according to a report by consultancy firm PwC.
The PwC report titled, Value Added Service: The Next Wave, says it was time for India to evolve from the well-established mobile messaging and commoditised voice play and shift focus to customer segmentation based data play.
According to the report, by 2015, the total revenue from communication services was expected to exceed Rs20,000 crore while that from entertainment services would be around Rs25,000 crore while the information services vertical would contribute Rs7,900 crore.
PwC India executive director – consulting Sivarama Krishnan said India had a very diverse consumer segment based on socio, economic, cultural and linguistic diversity.
He added that the diversity, coupled with a young and increasingly affluent population and the fact that India was yet to reach its potential when it came to broadband penetration were strong indicators that Mobile VAS had huge potential.
According to Krishnan, India was expected to set benchmarks on VAS just as it did in the pure voice segment.
