A recent survey by Gartner said India would account for 62 per cent of overall smartphone sales by 2018. According to commentators, this would really be a massive growth of the mobile market in India, which would come about due to a recent 4G rollout and the digital India movement.

Thanks to the aggressive 4G network rollout the demand for smartphones would keep growing in coming years, says the report.

The Indian mobile market is in the consolidation phase and being the third largest mobile market in the world India would continue to remain an attractive place for many smartphone makers and many companies would like to grow their business share here.

Global giants like Samsung, Apple are looking to increase their share of the market and the leading Chinese smartphone maker is also not behind in the race. A number of companies, including Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Lenovo, had committed huge investment and would not want to leave any chance of reaping benefit from the emerging Indian market.

According to Gartner research director Anshul Gupta, mobile sales in the major markets like the US, China, and Western Europe were declining due to which India had become the second choice after China.

''As the Indian cellular market goes through consolidation and aggressive 4G roll out, demand for smartphones will continue to grow,'' the report said. ''With smartphone penetration maturing in many developed markets, continued growth in the world's 3rd largest smartphone market makes India an attractive market. Smartphones in India are expected to account for 62 per cent of all mobile phones sales in the country in 2018,'' it said.
