India's core sector industries expand by 4.6 per cent in November

The six core sector industries in the country comprising crude oil, petroleum refining, coal, electricity, cement and steel, recorded a growth of 4.6 per cent (provisional) during April-November 2009-10 against 3.5 per cent during the corresponding period of the previous year.
The index of the six core industries having a combined weight of 26.7 per cent in the index of industrial production (IIP) with base 1993-94 stood at 247.8 (provisional) in November 2009 and registered a growth of 5.3 per cent (provisional) compared with 0.8 per cent growth in November 2008.
Production of crude oil (weight of 4.17 per cent in the IIP) registered a negative growth of (-) 1.6 per cent (provisional) in November 2009 compared with a growth of 0.5 per cent in November 2008. For the April-November 2009-10 period, crude oil production in the country registered a growth of (-) 1.4 per cent (provisional) compared with (-) 0.6 per cent during the same period of 2008-09.
Petroleum refinery production (weight of 2.00 per cent in the IIP) recorded a growth of 4.9 per cent (provisional) in November 2009 compared with a negative (-) 1.1 per cent growth in November 2008. Petroleum refinery production registered a growth of (-) 1.2 per cent (provisional) during April-November 2009-10 compared with a growth rate of 3.8 per cent during the same period of 2008-09.
Coal production (weight of 3.2 per cent in the IIP) grew 3.3 per cent (provisional) in November 2009 compared with a growth rate of 9.7 per cent in November 2008. Coal production grew 9.3 per cent (provisional) during April-November 2009-10 compared with an increase of 8.6 per cent during the same period of 2008-09.
Electricity generation (weight of 10.17 per cent in the IIP) rose 1.8 per cent (provisional) in November 2009 compared with a growth rate of 2.6 per cent in November 2008. Electricity generation grew 5.9 per cent (provisional) during April-November 2009-10 compared with a growth rate of 2.8 per cent in the same period of 2008-09.
Cement production (weight of 1.99 per cent in the IIP) posted a growth of 9.0 per cent (provisional) in November 2009 compared with an 8.7 per cent growth in November 2008. Cement production grew 11 per cent (provisional)
during April-November 2009-10 compared with an increase of 6.0 per cent in the same period of 2008-09.
Production of finished (carbon) steel (weight of 5.13 per cent in the IIP) recorded a growth of 11.7 per cent (provisional) in November 2009 compared with a negative (-) 6.3 per cent (estimated) growth in November 2008. Finished steel production grew 2.9 per cent (provisional) during April-November 2009-10 compared with an increase of 3 per cent during the same period of 2008-09.
