JSW Energy developing India’s largest commercial-scale green hydrogen project

JSW Energy is developing India's largest commercial-scale green hydrogen project, marking a milestone in the company's entry into the energy market.
The venture also is significant as the company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with JSW Steel Ltd to supply green hydrogen and green oxygen to JSW Steel Ltd, which will become the first in the nation to produce green steel.
The company has already signed a seven-year contract to supply 3,800 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen to JSW Steel, besides supplying green oxygen.
As per the MoU, JSW Energy will be supplying an additional 85,000-90,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and 720,000 tonnes of green oxygen annually to JSW Steel by 2030.
JSW Energy expects the project to be up and running by the end of 2025. The hydrogen and oxygen produced will mainly be used for the group’s captive requirement as JSW Steel is venturing into green steel manufacturing.
Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) had allocated an additional 6,800 tonnes production capacity under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme.
JSW energy is also engaged in the construction of a huge Battery Energy Storage Project (BESS), as part of its initiative of creating an electric vehicle ecosystem in the country.
The project, also awarded by SECI, consists of two installations with 500 MWh storage capacity each. These will be capable of two hours of storage in one cycle.
The project will be developed under a Build Own Operate and Transfer (BOOT) mechanism and will be transferred after 12 years.
