Mahindra sets up integrated EV and battery manufacturing facility at Chakan
09 Jan 2025
Mahindra & Mahindra has set up a dedicated manufacturing facility for electric vehicles (EVs) and an assembly line for batteries at its Chakan complex in Pune. This fully integrated facility aims at creating a manufacturing ecosystem for sustainable production of electric origin SUVs and expanding EVs role in mobility.
The new integrated EV manufacturing facility is highly automated with over 1,000 robots and autonomous transfer systems, focused on the roll-out of next-generation electric SUVs.
Mahindra envisages an inclusive workforce, with a minimum 25 per cent women workers at the new site. Besides, there will be special emphasis on work culture, skill development and product quality.
The new facility, located within Mahindra’s 2.83 sq km Chakan manufacturing hub, is future-ready with renewable energy powering the whole facility and minimum use of ground water, with sustainability in mind.
Mahindra has allocated Rs4,500 crore, out of its Rs16,000 crore 2022-27 investment plan, to support EV operations, including development of powertrain, software and technology, besides expanding production capacity.
This fully automated battery manufacturing plant integrates state-of-the -art processes developed indigenously to ensure production of highly durable and fault-free batteries.
Mahindra aims at aligning its manufacturing process with sustainability, supporting India’s transition to electric mobility, while also fostering the spirit of innovation.
The battery pack to be manufactured at the EV battery unit will feature a patented pallet design ensuring optimal insulation, hidden cell terminal welding for better connectivity and improved performance. It will also have real-time temperature monitoring and fault detection capabilities, assuring safety for the consumer.
Mahindra’s new EV-battery facility combines localised assembly, high-end automation, and a dedication to innovation, which is in line with its commitment to ‘Make in India for the World’ and India's COP26 targets for 2030.
