New manufacturing policy proposes zoning of industries

The draft manufacturing policy approved by the cabinet envisages creation of large integrated industrial townships called National Investment and Manufacturing Zones (NIMZs).

These large manufacturing zones will provide state-of-the-art infrastructure, clean and energy-efficient technologies as also the necessary social and institutional infrastructure in order to provide a productive environment to persons transitioning from the primary to the secondary and tertiary sectors.

Land use will be on the basis of zoning and there will be industrial clusters for different manufacturing industries.

Land selected for industrial purposes will as far as possible be waste, infertile land not suitable for cultivation. Industrial zones will also be away from any ecologically fragile area but will have reasonable access to basic resources.

The revised draft manufacturing policy envisages specific interventions, broadly in the areas of industrial infrastructure development and improvement of the business environment, through rationalisation and simplification of business regulations.

The draft policy also proposes development of appropriate technologies, especially green technologies, for sustainable development and skill development of the younger population.
