It’s monsoon, and raining discounts – for 1 more day
29 Jun 2017
With about 40 hours to go before India's biggest tax reform – the Goods and Services Tax or GST - rolls out, people are making a beeline to white goods stores and online shopping sites to grab last minute deals.
Big Bazaar has decided to keep its stores open till midnight on 30 June. It is running a sale with discounts up to 22 per cent. Flipkart started its sale on Wednesday midnight. Amazon too has been running a similar sale with 40 to 50 per cent discounts.
The pre-GST sale helps retailers clear inventory. Post the rollout the prices of many daily items such as toothpaste will decrease. Times of India quoted Future Group chief executive Kishore Biyani as saying while most GST sales are slated to end on 30 June, 1 July is just the beginning. He also said that prices of many daily items such as toothpaste and others are going to decrease with the advent of GST.
But FMCG companies said they are going to adopt a wait-and-watch policy. Meanwhile, one does not know if the massive discounts, particularly on electronics items and mobile phones, will come to an abrupt end on 1 July. But shoppers are not taking any chances.
