27 Feb 2014
Chief minister J Jayalalithaa today laid the foundation for a super-critical thermal power project at Ennore near Chennai in a bid to step up power production in the state.
Lanco Infra Tech has been awarded the work for construction of the 660MW thermal plant, costing Rs4,956 and the company will spend Rs3961 crore, Lanco chief Madusudhan Rao said.
The chief minister also handed over the work order for setting up the plant to Lanco Infratech officials at the state secretariat.
However, no time frame has been fixed the completion of the project, the first super-critical thermal power project in Tamil Nadu.
"This is the first super-critical thermal power station to be established in Tamil Nadu," an official release said.
Super-critical thermal projects help produce electricity by using minimum amount of coal. The super critical boilers also allow the plants to operate at high temperatures.
The project is part of the expansion plans of the Ennore Thermal Power Station.
Jayalalithaa had announced plans to establish the project in the assembly on 29 March 2012.
