Kanimozhi meets I-T officials ahead of bail verdict
12 May 2011
Tamil Nadu chief minister and DMK supremo M Karunanidhi's daughter Kanimozhi today met income tax officials in Chennai for questioning in connection with the 2G spectrum scam.
Kanimozhi is accused of conspiring with former telecom minister A Raja, now in jail, of accepting a massive kickback through her family-owned channel Kalaignar TV.
Today, she was questioned by Income Tax authorities for about 90 minutes over a Rs200 crore transfer from Shahid Balwa-owned DB Realty to Kalaignar TV, in which she owns a 20-per cent stake (her mother holds the majority stake).
The 43-year-old MP appeared in person after summons were issued by the I-T department, although she could have deputed someone in her place – the Delhi court overlooking the 2G spectrum case has exempted her from personal experience.
Kanimozhi has been chargesheeted by the Central Bureau of Investigation and has applied for bail in the special CBI court in Delhi. A decision on her bail application is expected on Saturday.
Meanwhile, on Friday the results of the Tamil Nadu elections will be declared, and it will be known if the 2G scam that has shadowed the DMK party has turned voters against Karunanidhi and his family.
