New Delhi: Telecom and IT minister Dayanidhi Maran today said cellular operators could face a penalty of minimum Rs1,000 for each unverified subscriber.

In a media interaction in New Delhi, Maran said, that with cellular services segment of the telecom sector growing by "leaps and bounds", subscriber verification becomes necessary due to security considerations. "We have already started the process and soon it will be formalised."

He also disagreed that the verification process had impacted the growth momentum. "It has not at all affected the growth of subscriber addition." He also said that those who had been disconnected would eventually be reactivated after they had submitted the required documents.

According to a survey by the ministry of telecommunications, Hutch and Reliance Communications have the highest percentage of verified subscribers at 93 per cent followed by Bharti Airtel at 90 per cent and state owned BSNL at 86 per cent. Tatas were among the lowest verified users with 73 per cent.
