MARG Karaikal Port starts container services

MARG Karaikal Port has started container handling services to its fast-growing cargo mix, achieving a new landmark. The first container vessel mv Ruhunupura carrying multiple cargo called at the port on 31 July 2011, to discharge containers for the first time.
MRAG Karaikal Port will now start regular container feeder services to Colombo, thereby linking the port to key overseas destinations. The port will also offer connectivity to key domestic ports such as Vizag, to facilitate and promote costal movement of cargo.
"The launch of container handling services at MARG Karaikal Port will provide local industries with a cost-effective and time-efficient alternative. Central Tamil Nadu region is home to key foreign trade industries such as garments, textiles, cement, machinery and engineering goods, paper, granite, steel scrap and seafood would significantly benefit by the container handling facility at MARG Karaikal Port," G R K Reddy, chairman and managing director of MARG Karaikal Port, said commenting on the launch of the service.
"The port's single-window model with customer-centric operations, simplified operating procedures and quick response time will avoid delays and high costs associated with the container trade at present," he added.
The port is well linked by rail and road to important trade and industry centres in the hinterland, providing multiple transportation option for export containers moving in and out of the port.
The port has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) to provide dedicated regular container train service linking the port with container ICDs at Coimbatore, Tirupur and Bangalore (Whitefield), a port release said.
"MARG Karaikal Port is fast emerging as a new gateway to Central Tamil Nadu since its launch in 2009. With the port developing state-of-the-art container handling operations in close proximity to the region's industrial; facilities, local trade can look forward to reductions in logistics time, inland haulage costs and truck detention time," added M L N Acahryulu, executive director, Marine Infrastructure, at MARG Karaikal Port.
Designed as a modern, deepwater multi-commodity port capable of handling Panamax vessels, with a full suit of the latest cargo handling equipment and processes, including three mobile harbour cranes, reach stackers and other associated facilities for container handling as also sufficient open storage areas and warehouse space, MARG Karaikal Port follows the best operational processes and practices in the industry, the release added.
