MNP requests touch 50.16 million in May

The requests for mobile number portability (MNP) that permits users to switch operators while retaining their mobile numbers, rose to 50.16 million as of end May 2012 from 45.89 million during the previous month, an increase of 4.27 million.
The maximum number of requests were received in Zone-I (northern & western India) with Rajasthan leading with4.62 million requests, followed by Gujarat with 4.58 million. In Zone-II covering the southern & eastern regions, the maximum number of requests came from Karnaaka(5.82 million) followed by the Andhra Pradesh service area with 4.81 million.
In May 2012, the total number of subscribers who had submitted their request for MNP was 4.27 million.
MNP was introduced across the country in January 2012, with the pilot launch of the service in Haryana on 25 November 2010.
India's total number of telephone subscribers surged to 960.90 million as of May-end, a 0.84 per cent rise from the 952.91 million a month ago, while the total mobile user base rose to 929.37 million.
