The long-awaited mobile number portability (MNP) is here, finally. MNP would be available to from 1 November onwards to subscribers, telecom minister A Raja said in New Delhi today.

With the 3G services to be rolled out by mobile operators, the mobile number portability surely promises good days ahead for subscribers.

MNP would, however, be only partially operational from 1 November, Raja said, adding that the government planned to begin with Haryana.

With MNP facility, mobile phone users will be able to retain their ten digit phone numbers even if they switch to a different mobile service.

For instance, Airtel subscribers would be able to retain their numbers once they apply for MNP before changing to any other cellular service they opt for.

The implementation of the MNP has already been delayed thrice due to various reasons. One of the reasons for the delay was non-availability of necessary infrastructure.

Syniverse Technologies and MNP Interconnection Telecom Solutions have been issued licences to implement MNP in India. MNP Interconnections is a 74:26 joint venture between US-based Telcordia and Deepak Talwar Consultants.
