Global media baron Rupert Murdoch yesterday launched The Daily, the first iPad-only newspaper, taking journalism to a new playing ground from the traditional newspaper and free internet news services.

The Daily was officially introduced at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City by News Corp chairman Murdoch along with Eddie Cue, Apple's vice president of internet services.

''New times demand new journalism,'' Murdoch said to an eagerly awaiting audience comprising reporters and media personnel, advertisers and others.

The first of its kind digital newspaper, exclusive to Apple's iPad, would cost subscribers 99 cents per week or $39.99 yearly.

The price tag of The Daily has been kept intentionally low and it will be available free for the first fortnight.

Murdoch believes that around 800,000 subscribers would make The Daily viable. Apple's iPad has currently 15 million customers worldwide, and he expects a good number of them would get attracted to the innovative service.
