Nine telecom firms bid for 3G auctions

The Department of Telecom (DoT) today said that nine telcos had submitted bids in the 3G spectrum auction.
The big names of the telecom sector in the country have all put in bids for 3G namely- Bharti Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, Videocon, Aircel, S Tel and Tata Telecom.
DoT also said 11 applications for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) had also been received.
The 3G auctions will kick off on 9April and the services are set to start from 1 September.
The 3G mobile services will allow users to download content at high-speed access broadband services. The government is looking to net Rs35,000 crore from the auction.
The government is selling three slots of spectrum across the country though four slots will be on offer in selected states. The reserve price for pan-India spectrum has been set at Rs3,500 crore.
